Remembering The Man. The Priest. The Bishop.

Bishop Baraga died on the morning of January 19, 1868. His funeral was held eleven days later and the city of Marquette, declared it a civic day of mourning. Although extremely cold and blizzard like conditions, St. Peter Cathedral was filled to capacity and people stood outside to attend the funeral. People who were catholic and people who weren’t both attended because Bishop Baraga was so important to them.

His body lays to rest in the Baraga Chapel, attached to St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, MI.
